The ruins of the ancient fortress Jele Dzong will pop up on your way, together with some high level passes, including Phume La positioned at 4,210 metres in altitude and Simkota Tsho at 4,110m. After that you will descend among juniper and pine forests to arrive in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. On your way back you will have the chance to admire various Buddhist monasteries among which Taktsang Monastery in the Paro Valley, Phadjoding and Tashichho dzong.
The famous Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest is the the world wide known symbol of Bhutan. It is perched on a rocky cliff at about 600 metres in altitude supervising the Paro Valley. The temple complex dates back to the 17th century and was constructed around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, where the legendary saint Guru Padma Sambhava is said to have passed by in the 8th century three years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours meditating. Also, the legend informs that Padmasambhava appeared flying on the back of a tigress (that’s why the name Tiger’s Nest) to fight the demons who were resisting the proliferation of Buddhism inside the kingdom of Bhutan.
Padmasambhava is considered the parent of Buddhism in Bhutan and is a sacred kingdom.
